Bulelani Zola Qumza is a member of Khayelitsha United Mambazo Choir.
The Khayelitsha United Mambazo Choir was founded in 1991. The group is based in Khayelitsha, the largest township in the Cape Town area of South Africa.
Khayelitsha United Mambazo Choir specializes in Isicathamiya, a South-African style of music dating from the nineteen twenties and thirties, a period in which many men moved from the country to the city to try and find work. To be able to express their emotions – and to have fun – they shared living accommodations, the result being an exclusively male community. Under the leadership of its founder Joseph Shabalala, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, became the world’s most renowned choir in its genre. They gained world fame because of their collaboration with Paul Simon (together they recorded the ‘Graceland’ album). This choir is a huge source of inspiration for our K-men, the Khayelitsha United Mambazo Choir.
If they are not on tour, they perform in Cape Town, every day, at the V&A Waterfront. In addition, they collaborate with the Olive Leaf Foundation, a charity whose commitment includes the well-being of Khayelitsha’s children and adults. Thus, our ‘K – men’ are role models for boys from that area. They not only teach them how to sing, but also how to strive for a better future.
Internationally, the Khayelitsha United Mambazo Choir performed in the Netherlands, Israel and Switzerland. They released several CDs. GOOD HOPE is the third South African Road Trip production.
